Structural Steel Fitter – Richmond, VA
Job Type: Full-Time, Contract-to-Hire
Location: Richmond, VA
Shifts: 1st & 2nd Shift Available
Pay: Up to $28/hour, based on experience
2nd Shift Differential: Additional $3/hour
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Structural Steel Fitter for a fabrication shop. This position focuses on preparing and assembling structural steel components, using shop drawings and measurements to ensure accurate fit, alignment, and final assembly.
Responsibilities
- Review blueprints, shop drawings, and fabrication specifications before starting work.
- Perform steel layout, fitting, positioning, and assembly.
- Measure and mark materials according to drawing dimensions.
- Prepare structural steel components for fabrication and fit-up.
- Position, align, and secure parts to achieve proper assembly.
- Set up and operate fabrication machinery and shop equipment, including a track torch.
- Check measurements and component placement throughout the fabrication process.
- Verify that assemblies meet required dimensions, alignment, and fit-up specifications.
- Examine completed work for quality, accuracy, and workmanship.
- Work with supervisors and other shop employees to maintain production schedules.
- Keep tools, materials, and work areas organized.
- Follow all applicable shop safety procedures and production requirements.
Qualifications
- Previous experience with structural steel fitting, layout, or fabrication.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
- Hands-on experience fitting, aligning, positioning, and assembling structural steel.
- Ability to set up and operate a track torch.
- Working knowledge of welding methods, fabrication machinery, and common shop tools.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate, quality work.
- Ability to work productively as part of a team.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
- AWS or other welding certifications are a plus.
