We are seeking a highly strategic and experienced New Product and Regulatory Counsel to serve as the lead legal partner for our product, engineering, and technology teams. What You'll Be Doing:
- Provide forward-looking legal advice on all technology-related matters, including software development, cloud computing, artificial intelligence (GenAI/LLMs), and machine learning initiatives.
- Embed with product and engineering teams to review new features and products from ideation to launch, ensuring privacy-by-design and AI-safety-by-design principles are met.
- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous updating of company policies related to acceptable AI use, AI governance, data privacy, open-source licensing, and intellectual property.
- Monitor and interpret emerging technology laws and regulations globally, with a specific focus on AI regulations (e.g., the EU AI Act, state-level algorithmic bias laws), data privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA), and cybersecurity mandates.
- Identify potential legal and ethical risks related to technology projects particularly those involving automated decision-making or AI-generated content and develop actionable strategies to mitigate them.
- Draft, review, and negotiate high-stakes technology agreements, including SaaS, PaaS, strategic partnerships, and complex technology vendor contracts.
- Scrutinize agreements with AI model providers and platforms, focusing on critical issues such as data usage rights (model training), IP indemnification, output ownership, and confidentiality.
- Advise on the protection and enforcement of the company’s intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and copyrights specifically addressing novel IP challenges related to AI-generated content and open-source software.
- Partner closely with IT, Security, Privacy, and Compliance teams to ensure data workflows, especially those feeding into data lakes or AI models, comply with strict privacy and security standards.
- Act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership across IT, Security, Product Development, Engineering, Sales, and Business Development.
- Develop and deliver training to employees on relevant legal topics, including responsible AI usage, technology contract fundamentals, IP protection, and data privacy best practices
What You'll Bring:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with at least one state bar.
- 10+ years of relevant legal experience (in-house tech experience strongly preferred) with a deep focus on product counseling, regulatory compliance, and technology transactions.
- Demonstrated experience advising on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data privacy. You should understand how LLMs work, how data is used to train them, and the legal nuances of generative AI.
- Strong working knowledge of global data protection laws (GDPR, CCPA) and a strong grasp of the emerging regulatory landscape for AI and digital services.
- Ability to translate complex legal and regulatory risks into practical, actionable business advice for technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.
- Proven ability to operate autonomously, lead cross-functional initiatives, and influence executive decision-making..
- Prior experience building or scaling an AI Governance framework or AI review committee.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., CIPP/US, CIPP/E) are a plus.
- Background or undergraduate degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field..
