The Opportunity
UJET is searching for a Staff Software Engineer (Fullstack) to join our growing team! The ideal candidate is a seasoned fullstack engineer who has shipped several products at large scale and is meticulous with code style and quality, with the ability to own features and end-to-end architecture across the frontend and backend. As a Staff engineer, you will act as the subject-matter expert (SME) for your product domain, oversee its quality across product and integration boundaries, and partner closely with engineering managers to raise the technical bar across the organization. You are a strong practitioner of AI-driven development - using AI coding tools and agents to accelerate delivery, and helping the team adopt these practices effectively and responsibly.

Responsibilities
- Establish yourself as the subject-matter expert (SME) for your product domain, and become the go-to person for initiatives across the team
- Oversee product quality for your domain, ensuring quality across domains and product/integration boundaries
- Be a collaborative team player who can lead and deliver fullstack services with high availability, low latency, and auto scalability
- Partner with M3/M4 managers and collaborate across engineers, product owners, and designers to accomplish tasks and unblock delivery
- Possess a deep understanding of the product and business goals which translate into technical design documents
- Architect, design, develop, deploy, and operate services that serve start-ups to enterprise clients
- Be a member of the UJET integration developer community affecting and driving our architecture across the company
- Drive strong engineering practices within your team and define and teach these practices within the UJET developer community
- Champion AI-driven development across the team — leverage AI coding assistants and agentic workflows to accelerate delivery, and define best practices, guardrails, and quality standards for their use
- Evaluate and integrate AI-assisted tooling across the software development lifecycle (design, code, review, testing, and documentation)
- Contribute to the vision and long-term strategy in your domain of expertise
- Aid in root cause analysis and debugging, and level up the quality of bug tracking and reporting across teams
- Find ways to spread learning across the organization (give internal talks, contribute to internal blogs, etc.)
- Coach other engineers to craft quantitative models of their systems' performance and cost
- Design, build, document, release, and support multi-tier, scalable, and reliable full-stack software systems.
- Gather technical requirements, make architectural trade-off decisions, apply synchronous and asynchronous design patterns, write and review code, and deliver software products with speed and quality.
- Interface and collaborate with vendor and partner teams as the technical point of contact for new and on-going integration projects as needed.

Requirements
- 8+ years' experience in software development, with substantial fullstack (frontend and backend) development experience and a track record of operating as an SME within a product or technical domain
- You have strong foundational knowledge of modern, distributed computing.
- You have a proven track record of understanding the performance of large-scale services, quantitatively and in fine details.
- Working experience around a breadth of datastores including MySQL, NoSQL, Redis or Elasticsearch
- Efficiency in software best practice and tools like Git, Docker, CI, 12factor, etc
- Previous experience in designing and scaling microservice architecture
- Capable of writing optimal code across the stack, including at least one backend language (Java, Go, Ruby, Python) and a modern frontend framework (e.g., React, Angular)
- Strong hands-on proficiency with AI-driven development — AI coding assistants and agentic workflows (e.g., Claude, Copilot, Cursor) — with the judgment to apply them effectively while upholding code quality
- Ability to partner cross-functionally and influence technical direction beyond your immediate team, in a fast-paced environment
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience

Please note that this position requires 2 days worked in office in Porto, Portugal weekly. 

Annual Portugal Hiring Range: €70,000 - €97,500 

*A candidate’s actual placement within this range will depend on geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level.
