Senior Software Engineer Job Description
We're looking for an experienced, talented Senior Software Engineer to join the Student Activities team at Freckle by Renaissance — a global leader in pre-K–12 education technology. Freckle makes sure no student gets left behind through its adaptive, personalized practice programs. You'll bring your talents and expertise to continue building and scaling our highly available, distributed SaaS platform, used by millions of K-12 students every month worldwide.
The Student Activities team owns the applications that students, teachers, and school administrators use every day. As a senior member of the team, you'll own features end-to-end across the full stack and help set the technical direction that keeps these products fast, reliable, and easy to build on.
In this role as a Senior Software Engineer, you will:
- Architect, design, and develop features end-to-end for the students, teachers, and school administrators we serve — from the React/TypeScript frontend to the PostgreSQL backend, APIs, the infrastructure layer, and the data pipeline.
- Design data models and schemas that keep our systems correct, performant, and maintainable as they scale.
- Build and maintain highly available web and backend systems that serve millions of users and thousands of requests per second.
- Thoughtfully adopt AI tooling to accelerate your own work and improve how the team builds, ships and maintain software.
- Maintain and evolve backend services like our curricula-api and progress services that power student practice and reporting.
- Mentor and support other engineers, conduct code reviews, and champion strong engineering practices across the team.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers, and communicate effectively in a distributed remote work environment.
- Participate in the on-call rotation to ensure prompt resolution of customer-facing incidents.
Qualifications
For this role as a Senior Software Engineer, you should have:
- 5+ years of professional software development experience shipping high-quality web-based software that solves important problems for large numbers of users.
- Strong full-stack proficiency: hands-on experience with React (or a comparable SPA framework) and TypeScript on the frontend, and building backend services and APIs.
- Solid data modeling skills and experience working with relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred).
- Experience conducting code reviews and mentoring other engineers.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, and a proven ability to thrive as part of an agile, multidisciplinary team.
Bonus Points:
- Experience with event-based / event-driven architecture.
- Experience with our infrastructure stack: AWS (ECS/Fargate, RDS, S3/CloudFront, Elasticache, Lambda) and Docker.
- Experience with CI/CD (GitHub Actions) and observability/telemetry tooling (Datadog, Bugsnag, or similar).
- A passion for education and improving outcomes for students and teachers
Salary Range: The base range for this position is $109,500.00 - $150,550.00. This range is based on national market data and may vary by experience and location.
