Railroad Field Supervisor
Location: Merrillville, IN
Job Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire
Starting Salary: $72,800/year, with higher compensation available based on experience
Position Summary
We are hiring a Railroad Field Supervisor to coordinate crews and oversee field operations involving railroad emergency response, railcar work, load adjustment and transfer, and track maintenance and construction.
This is a hands-on leadership position focused on safe job execution, crew performance, equipment readiness, accurate reporting, and communication with customers and regulatory personnel.
What You’ll Do
- Direct daily activities and assign work to field crews.
- Conduct safety meetings and enforce PPE, FRA, DOT, and company safety requirements.
- Oversee field projects and assist with hands-on work and heavy equipment operations.
- Communicate professionally with customers and regulatory agencies.
- Complete payroll, equipment-use records, and project reports accurately.
- Train, coach, and evaluate crew members.
- Develop job quotes covering labor, equipment, and logistics.
- Check equipment readiness and coordinate maintenance as needed.
- Keep projects on schedule while maintaining safety and quality standards.
Required Skills & Experience
- 2+ years of railroad industry experience.
- Working knowledge of FRA, DOT, and applicable safety regulations.
- Strong leadership, communication, and crew-management abilities.
- Experience using Microsoft Office and reporting systems.
- Valid driver's license; CDL Class A or B preferred.
- Heavy equipment operating experience, including cranes, excavators, or similar equipment.
- Ability to read and understand load charts and rigging practices.
- Ability to lead crews during demanding, time-sensitive field operations.
- Strong organization, documentation, and reporting skills.
Work Requirements
- Must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Frequent travel and overnight stays are required.
- Must be able to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, walking on uneven terrain, and working extended hours.
- Ability to work safely in active railroad and other field environments.
