About The Role
We are looking for a Customs Expert to own end-to-end customs compliance across Europe for Emma's Tax & Customs team. You will be responsible for classifying products, maintaining Emma's AEO status, and acting as the single point of contact with customs authorities — work that keeps our international shipments compliant and moving without delay.
You'll report to the Head of Customs and work closely with Operations, Transportation, Strategic Procurement, and Product Development teams.
What You'll Do
- Own import and export customs compliance across the EU, UK, and Switzerland, ensuring all documentation meets legal requirements.
- Classify products accurately by HS code, assessing material, components, and product type to determine the correct customs treatment.
- Maintain Emma's AEO (Authorized Economic Operator) status across Europe and drive the development of related customs processes and SOPs.
- Act as the single point of contact for customs offices, with Germany as the primary authority, resolving requests and inspections directly.
- Create and monitor correct supplier declarations, ensuring accuracy and consistency across all of Emma's customs documentation.
- Drive on-time completion of tax assessments and duty and VAT payments, keeping customs inspection delays at or below 1%.
- Support planning and execution of intermodal transports across sea, rail, air, and road, monitoring fulfillment to keep shipments compliant.
- Partner with Operations, Transportation, Procurement, and Product teams as Emma's internal point of contact for all customs topics.
Who We're Looking For
- You hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree; the exact field of study does not determine your fit for this Customs Expert role.
- You bring 5+ years of experience in customs brokerage, dealing with import and export requirements across multiple countries.
- You know how to check import and export requirements by product (HS code), by country, and via the relevant customs platforms.
- You have hands-on HS classification experience, assessing product material, components, and type to define the correct classification.
- You have AEO knowledge or prior experience working with German customs authorities; this is a strong plus, not a requirement.
- You think in a structured way and communicate clearly and directly, even when handling complex or ambiguous customs topics.
- You take full ownership of your work, driving every task to completion and holding yourself accountable for the outcomes.
- You are fluent in English; German at a B2 level is a strong plus, given our primary customs authority is based in Germany.
What We Offer
- The opportunity to create real impact, take ownership and accountability, and drive meaningful change.
- Continuous learning and development through hands-on experience, mentoring, formal training, and access to tools such as our Learning Hub and Nilo.
- A collaborative community of smart, driven people where you learn, contribute, and connect, every day and through team events.
- A global environment, working daily with diverse perspectives across 4 offices and 70+ nationalities.
- Private Health Insurance and 24 vacation days per year, with 1 extra day per year worked (until a limit of 29 days per year).
- A flexible hybrid setup with up to 22 remote days per quarter.
- A modern, pet-friendly office in Parque das Nações, Lisbon.
Become an Emmie
We are on a mission to become No.1 in the world of sleep, and we’re looking for driven, ambitious people to help us shape what’s next. If you’re curious, hands-on, and ready to challenge the status quo, you’ll find the space here to make things happen and create real impact.
We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and are committed to building an inclusive workplace. We celebrate diversity and consider all qualified applicants regardless of race, ethnic origin, religion or belief, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or age.
Our aim is to get back to you within a few days. Due to the high volume of applications, there may be slight delays, but we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
