Senior Software Engineer II - Audit & Logging
About the role
Dive in and do the best work of your career at DigitalOcean. Journey alongside a strong community of top talent who are relentless in their drive to build the simplest scalable cloud. If you have a growth mindset, naturally like to think big and bold, and are energized by the fast-paced environment of a true industry disruptor, you’ll find your place here. We value winning together—while learning, having fun, and making a profound difference for the dreamers and builders in the world.
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer II to join our Audit Logging & Security Visibility team. This team builds the systems that record and surface security-relevant activity across DigitalOcean's cloud platform, so customers and internal teams can detect threats, investigate incidents, and prove compliance — at billions of events a day.
In this role, you will set the technical direction for Audit Logging at DigitalOcean — defining how our event pipelines, SIEM integrations, and security visibility platform evolve over multi-year horizons, and how they intersect with IAM, threat detection, and platform needs. You will be a primary technical voice in cross-org decisions, and you will set the engineering standards the team builds against. If you are a seasoned engineer who wants to combine deep technical expertise with broad organizational impact, this is the role for you.
What you'll do
- Define Platform Architecture: Set the multi-year technical strategy for audit logging, SIEM integration, and security visibility — designing for hyperscale event volumes and the evolving needs of enterprise customers.
- Architect for Cross-Domain Integration: Lead decisions on how audit and telemetry systems intersect with IAM, threat detection, and platform engineering, so signals stay consistent across all of them.
- Own Security Visibility Strategy: Define the long-term architecture for the Unified Security Dashboard and SIEM integrations (Splunk, Datadog, Chronicle, Sentinel) — setting patterns other teams build on, not just shipping one integration at a time.
- Set Sustaining Engineering Standards: Define what logging schema standards, event taxonomy, and operational hygiene look like across the domain, and hold the team accountable to that bar.
- Architect for True Scale: Design systems and data models that handle billions of events per day across multiple regions, with guaranteed delivery — anticipating multi-year growth, not just current load.
- Shape Cross-Org Technical Decisions: Be a key technical voice in design reviews spanning Audit Logging, IAM, Threat Detection, and Platform Engineering. Resolve architectural conflicts early, before they become production incidents.
- Mentor Senior Engineers: Coach engineers on system design, security engineering, and technical communication; act as a multiplier for the team's overall capability.
- Translate Strategy to Leadership: Communicate audit platform strategy and investment rationale to senior leadership, framing decisions in terms of customer trust, compliance risk, and business impact.
What You'll Add to DigitalOcean
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: 8+ years of software engineering experience, with real depth in audit logging, security telemetry, SIEM integration, or high-throughput data pipelines — ideally at cloud or enterprise scale.
- Language Expert: Expert-level Go, with strong judgment on gRPC-based service design that other engineers will build against.
- Systems Mastery: Proven ability to design and run high-throughput streaming systems (Kafka, Flink) at scale, with guaranteed delivery, ordering, and multi-region resilience.
- Security Observability: A track record of building security visibility platforms — dashboards, control planes, or SIEM integrations across cloud environments.
- Compliance & Distributed Systems: Solid understanding of audit requirements for SOC 2, ISO 27001, and similar frameworks; deep expertise in distributed systems that other teams depend on.
- Cloud Native: Hands-on expertise with Kubernetes, Terraform, SQL, and analytical/columnar data stores at platform scale.
- Communication: Able to drive technical consensus across org boundaries and translate platform strategy into business impact for leadership.
Nice to Have
- Experience with OpenTelemetry, OCSF, or other security telemetry standards.
- Familiarity with threat detection platforms or UEBA systems.
- Experience supporting compliance frameworks (SOC 2, FedRAMP, PCI-DSS) as they intersect with audit and access controls.
- Contributions to open-source security, observability, or data pipeline projects.
