About the role
They say the best deployable is no deployable, but we believe large deployable mechanisms are the future for large infrastructure in space.
At Beyond Reach Labs, we are designing and building the largest deployable structures ever flown to space. We believe data-driven simulation is key to the design, validation, and iterative improvement of these structures.
As a Founding Software Engineer, you will be responsible for building critical internal engineering tools that enable and accelerate the design and analysis process. As an early engineer, you will be responsible for a large scope of software engineering, including the development and maintenance of front-end tools that help with visualization and analysis, back-end data systems to collect and organize large amounts of test and simulation data, and standing up the compute infrastructure required to run large-scale simulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Tool Development
Quickly deploy new internal web-based tools for data analysis or visualization that empower our mechanical engineers to make better decisions and streamline workflows
Communicate with our leadership and engineering teams to understand needs and requirements, proactively suggesting ways these can be met with the right software tools, whether they are purchased or developed internally
Work with high performance scientific computing software to improve performance, robustness, metric reporting, and ease-of-use
Compute Infrastructure
Spin up and maintain compute capability for large-scale simulations that can take hours or days to run, benefit from live reporting, and flexible post-run analysis and visualization tooling
Deploy performant data storage solutions for simulation and test data that allow engineers to easily access historical data and incorporate it into their own analysis tools
Ensure good CI coverage while minimizing friction for non-software engineers working within a shared codebase
Develop, maintain, and improve pipelines for deploying internal tools quickly and safely
Real-to-Sim Development (nice-to-have)
Work with the simulation team to develop data and compute pipelines for improving simulation fidelity by leveraging data collected from tests and actual customer deployments
Develop innovative solutions and algorithms for data-driven improvement of our in-house simulation models
Build solutions that scale to many programs, customers, and individual products
Basic Qualifications
Either:
Bachelor’s degree or greater in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Computer Engineering, or
3-5 years experience working as a Software Engineer
Knowledge of software best practices across front-end, back-end, and cloud infrastructure
Experience developing software tools from 0 to 1
Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and take project ownership of projects with unclear or frequently-changing requirements
Preferred Qualifications
5 years experience in hardware-focused engineering organizations
Experience working on high-performance scientific computing projects
Experience working on sim-to-real solutions in aerospace or robotics companies
