We are seeking an experienced Export Compliance Manager to lead and enforce our U.S. trade compliance program, with a specialized focus on U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and U.S. government technology export controls.
The ideal candidate brings a strong legal and compliance background, overseeing the classification, licensing, and safeguarding of our critical technologies developed in our Silicon Valley (SV) office. This role is instrumental in ensuring that our R&D activities, technology transfers, and cross-border collaborations—especially reverse-exports to our South Korea HQ—strictly adhere to U.S. export control laws, mitigating regulatory risks as we expand our business footprint in the U.S.
Responsibilities
EAR & U.S. Compliance: Manage day-to-day U.S. export compliance operations, ensuring strict adherence to the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) enforced by the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS).
Licensing & Classification: Review and approve export documentation, manage technology and product classifications (ECCNs), and oversee export licensing activities, including deemed exports.
Technology Control Plans (TCPs): Develop, implement, and maintain internal compliance programs (ICP) and Technology Control Plans specifically tailored to the SV office's autonomous driving and software R&D environments.
Strategic Advisory & Risk Mitigation: Provide dedicated compliance advisory for cross-border engineering projects and business deals. Ensure that technology transfers between the SV office, Korea HQ, and international partners do not violate U.S. export control laws, preventing violations that could result in fines or operational disruptions.
U.S. Regulatory Audits & Monitoring: Regularly audit the company's U.S.-based intellectual property sharing, R&D, and development processes. Proactively monitor changes in U.S. tech regulations and sanctions, assessing their impact on business operations.
Qualifications
Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in law, international business, compliance, or a related field, with 5+ years of direct experience in export compliance and legal frameworks.
EAR Expertise: In-depth, demonstrable knowledge of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), including ECCN classification, deemed exports, license exceptions, and BIS licensing procedures.
Technical Acumen: Ability to comfortably read complex technical specifications to accurately classify the company's technology (e.g., software, AI, autonomous systems), even without formal engineering training.
Analytical Skills: Strong ability to conduct compliance risk assessments, audits, and red-flag reviews.
Preferred Qualifications
Bilingual Fluency: Fluency in both English and Korean is highly preferred to clearly explain highly technical U.S. compliance boundaries and collaborate seamlessly with the engineering teams at Korea HQ
