The State of Remote Hiring in 2026

By The RemJobs Team · · 7 min read · Read as markdown

Remote work stopped being a pandemic experiment years ago. The useful question in 2026 is no longer whether companies hire remotely, but where the jobs actually are, which regions are growing, and how a job seeker should aim.

We can answer that with data rather than opinion. RemJobs maps more than 250,000 startups and tech companies across 178 countries, reading each one's own public job board, so the picture below comes from real hiring, not a survey.

Here is what the numbers say about remote hiring right now, and what to do with them.

Remote hiring is a genuinely global market

The companies in our directory are spread across six broad regions. North America and Europe still hold the majority, but together Asia-Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa now account for more than a quarter of everything we track, and that share has been climbing.

North America32%
Europe29%
Asia-Pacific18%
Middle East & Africa5%
Latin America4%

For a job seeker, the takeaway is that remote roles are not confined to Silicon Valley. If you are open to roles that hire from your region or worldwide, you can browse them directly: remote hiring by region and country, or companies hiring from anywhere in the world.

Where the companies are

Broken down by country, the United States leads by a wide margin, but the long tail is where remote-friendly opportunity is growing fastest. India is already the second-largest market in our data.

United States~70,000
India~20,000
United Kingdom~10,500
Germany~10,500
Canada~9,300
Spain~7,600
France~5,800

You can open any of these as its own page, for example startups in the United States or startups in India, and see the companies on a map down to street level.

It is mostly startups, not just big tech

A common mistake is to picture remote work as a handful of giant tech firms. The reality is the opposite: the long tail of startups and scale-ups is where most remote hiring happens, and those companies are often the easiest to reach a decision-maker at.

  • More than 4,000 of the companies we track are Y Combinator companies. You can browse them by batch on the Y Combinator startups page.
  • We have founder names on file for over 68,000 companies, which matters because at a small company the person who posts the role is often the person who reads your application.
  • More than 12,000 companies have at least one open remote role as of this month, read straight from their Greenhouse, Lever or Ashby boards.

Context from outside our data: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics put about 23% of U.S. employees as working remotely at least part of the time in 2025, and most surveys now show hybrid as the single most common arrangement. Remote-first roles are a smaller slice, which is exactly why a directory that reads real job boards beats a generic search.

What this means for your 2026 job search

Three practical moves follow from the data:

  1. Aim by region, not just by title. A role open to your whole region or worldwide is far more likely to hire you than one quietly limited to one country. Filter for it rather than guessing.
  2. Go small. Startups and scale-ups post the most remote roles and have the shortest path to a human. Browse open roles at startups or find the company first and reach the founder directly.
  3. Follow the growth. If you are in Asia-Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East or Africa, the share of remote-friendly companies hiring into your region is rising. That is leverage, not a disadvantage.

How we counted

These figures come from the RemJobs directory as of October 2026. Companies are drawn from public startup directories, accelerator portfolios and each company's own website; remote hiring is read from each company's public job board (Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby), not from a self-declared "remote friendly" tag. Figures are rounded, and the live counts on the map and in our llms.txt are always current. External figures are attributed to their source in the text.

Questions

How many companies hire remotely in 2026?

In the RemJobs directory, more than 12,000 of the 250,000+ companies we track have at least one open remote role as of October 2026, read directly from their public job boards. The true number across the whole economy is larger, since we only cover companies on Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby.

Which region has the most remote jobs?

North America (about 32% of the companies we track) and Europe (about 29%) lead, but Asia-Pacific is now about 18% and growing fastest. Many roles are open region-wide or worldwide, so your location matters less than it used to.

Where can I see this data myself?

The RemJobs map shows every company by country and city for free, and remote hiring pages break it down by where companies hire. The counts there are always the current ones.
