# Senior Product Designer

**Alchemy** · San Francisco

Apply: https://jobs.ashbyhq.com/alchemy/8438fa3b-258d-4da1-9af1-3e1f5b71b931

## About Alchemy

Alchemy is a nanotechnology company based in Kitchener, Ontario with core operations in the automotive and defense sectors.

Automotive - With the widespread adoption of ADAS systems in new vehicles, the cost of replacing a windshield in new vehicles has tripled to $1500+. We have developed a windshield protection film product line called ExoShield to help vehicle owners protect their windshields. Our ExoShield GT3 film is sold through 400+ aftermarket installers and car dealerships in 56 countries that carry and install it for vehicle owners. For Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco owners (google: broken windshield club), our ExoShield ULTRA DIY kits are available via our website and dropshipping partners.

Defense - Over the last 3 years, we have been working with the Canadian Armed Forces to develop an infrared camouflage technology. We have received two contracts from CAF to develop our technology. Our solution has the ability to be integrated into the uniform directly (adding just 5-10g of weight vs. 600-18,000 kg of weight for other alternatives), has outperformed all existing NATO alternatives in multiple CAF field trials, and is receiving support from major elements of CAF for our next contract. This technology can also be adapted for other individual camouflage integrations (face paint and individual nettings) and for mobile camouflage applications (vehicle nettings and vehicle paints).

**About The Role**

As a Product Designer you'll sit at the intersection of product design, product thinking, and front-end engineering—someone who can take early, ambiguous ideas and turn them into interactive, evaluable experiences fast, helping teams make better decisions sooner.

This role is front-end and systems-heavy, with a strong balance of hands-on building and product design partnership. You’ll help us scale and evolve Alchemy’s UI system—owning core components, patterns, and implementation quality—while also jumping into product work when needed to unblock teams and raise the craft bar.

This is a high-leverage role: you’ll reduce handoff friction, increase prototype velocity, and elevate UI quality through hands-on building, close collaboration, and a strong point of view on systems.

**What You'll Do**

- Build production-quality prototypes (and, when appropriate, ship production front-end code) to validate UX direction quickly—often on tight timelines.

- Own and evolve Alchemy’s design system in practice: build and maintain reusable components, patterns, and interaction primitives that scale across products.

- Translate design intent into high-quality React/TypeScript UI, with attention to spacing, hierarchy, motion, and interaction polish.

- Drive system scalability: identify gaps, propose improvements, and ship additions that make the product ecosystem more consistent and faster to build.

- Partner closely with product designers to improve the craft and feasibility of design work—bringing an engineer’s pragmatism and a designer’s taste.

- Collaborate tightly with product engineers to reduce rework and make the path from prototype → implementation smoother.

- Improve “how we build UI” muscle across teams: documentation, examples, and workflow improvements that raise the baseline.

- Build for an AI-native product future: create interaction patterns and UI foundations that support rapid experimentation and iteration in AI-driven experiences.

- Contribute to design-system adoption and quality: tokens/components/docs, accessibility standards, and tooling (e.g., Storybook) when needed.

- Help teams iterate in short cycles (e.g., ~5–10 day “idea → prototype → decision” loops), bringing clarity to what’s possible and what’s worth building.**What We're Looking For**

- Strong front-end fundamentals and comfort building interactive UI (e.g., React + TypeScript; equivalent stacks welcome).

- Systems-minded builder: you’ve shipped and maintained component libraries / design systems (tokens, components, documentation, adoption).

- A designer’s eye: you care about hierarchy, spacing, typography, interaction details, and visual polish.

- Proven ability to prototype quickly without sacrificing craft—and to choose the right fidelity for the question at hand.

- Ability to operate in ambiguity and move fast with high ownership.

- Clear communicator across disciplines; you can translate between design intent and technical constraints.

- Bonus: accessibility fluency, Storybook (or similar), motion/animation experience, and experience scaling design systems across multiple product surfaces.**Benefits and Perks **
