## About 7shifts

Restaurant Scheduling, Payroll, and Retention tools in one app. Make team communication, tip management, and labor compliance easy.

## About the role

As a **Senior Software Developer, Mid-Market **at 7shifts, you'll be one of the founding engineers on our mid-market squad — the team responsible for building the foundational systems that serve restaurant groups with real complexity: multiple locations, layered permissions, and the need for rollup visibility across their entire operation. You'll work closely with a product counterpart, the data team, and report into a Director of Software Development.

The work is greenfield in the places that count. You'll define the data structures that power rollup reporting for multi-location operators and design a permissions and authorization system that properly supports role-based access control (RBAC) at scale, going meaningfully beyond what exists today. The expectation is a beta of rollup reports delivered across a few dimensions and the architectural path for the permissions system defined and in early development. This is not a backlog of tickets. It's a chance to shape systems used every day by over 1.5 million restaurant workers.

**What you’ll do:**

- Design and build the data structures and pipelines that power rollup reporting for multi-location restaurant groups, owning the work from schema design through beta delivery

- Architect and lead early development on a new permissions and authorization system, mapping the migration path from what exists today and sequencing the transition safely

- Partner with your product counterpart to sequence, estimate, and prioritize across two foundational workstreams, surfacing tradeoffs and risks early

- Communicate architectural decisions and status clearly to your team, the data team, and leadership, including when the plan needs to change

- Work alongside AI agents as part of how you build: spec-driven development, agentic harnesses for code generation and debugging, and deliberate agent use in your daily workflow

- Raise the technical bar of the squad through code reviews, design discussions, and hands-on guidance for teammates**What you bring:**

- 7–10 years of experience building production software, including work where data modeling or permissions and authorization were central to how the system worked, not just adjacent to it

- You've owned systems end to end: from technical design through delivery, support, and iteration, making real decisions when things broke or needed to change

- A track record of turning ambiguous, complex problems into clear, maintainable solutions without waiting for everything to be defined

- Comfort in large, evolving codebases, with the judgment to improve them incrementally while still shipping progress

- Strong technical judgment when balancing speed, quality, performance, and long-term maintainability, especially against a concrete timeline

- Clear communication and the ability to work effectively across engineering, product, and data partners

- Experience mentoring developers or leading technical discussions that raise the quality of decisions across a team**It’d be even cooler if you had:**

- Hands-on experience with data lake or warehouse tooling such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or AWS equivalents

- Background in a domain where accuracy, reliability, and real-time data were business-critical*This role is an existing vacancy and is part of our current hiring plan *

**Compensation**

The base compensation range for this position is CAD $145,000 to $190,000. This range reflects the full growth path for the role, from building core skills, to accomplished performance, through to role mastery. We typically target the accomplished level when hiring externally. At this level, individuals bring relevant experience in the role, demonstrate strong job-related skills, operate with confidence and consistency, and are able to deliver impact with limited ramp-up while still having meaningful opportunity to grow.

Compensation at 7shifts is performance and growth-driven. As you develop your skills and expand your impact over time, your compensation grows with you. Your specific placement within this range is based on your job-related skills, knowledge, and experience, as well as our internal equity assessment. We are always happy to discuss our approach throughout the hiring process.
